I’m a nerd. I’ve played a lot of games over the years, but Magic: The Gathering is a recent discovery for me, and I’ve been having a great time with it. The fastest way I know to learn something is to build things around it, so that’s what I’ve been doing. These are the resources I made to help me learn the game. If they help you too, even better.

Star Trek Prerelease Guide

Everything I wanted at the table for the Star Trek set’s prerelease: a video that covers the basics of building a Sealed deck, a card-by-card review of the set, and a reference guide you can keep open while you sort your pool. It covers the five bombs worth building around, the traps that look powerful but lose games, and a checklist that gets any pool to a solid 40 cards.

Earlier Prerelease Guides

I’ve written a reference guide for each prerelease I’ve played. These two came before the Star Trek set. They’re the guides only, without the video or card review, and they reflect what was known about each set at the time.

ReplayCoach

I’ve also been building ReplayCoach, software that coaches my own MTG Arena games. It reads my Arena game logs and gives me a turn-by-turn breakdown of every game: why I lost, the moments that decided it, and the board state at each step. For now it runs on my home network, so it’s not something you can try yet. It’s the tool I use to figure out what I should have done differently.
